2014 Opera Summer Festival

This summer West Edge Opera will be presenting three fully-staged operas with orchestra. The operas will be performed in repertory on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday during three weekends in July and August at the Ed Roberts Campus at the Ashby BART Station in Berkeley. La Bohème — Giacomo Puccini

Hydrogen Jukebox — music by Philip Glass, words by Allen Ginsberg

Ginsberg’s poetry captures the heart and heartache of America set to Glass’s signature pulsing lyricism.

The End of the Affair — Jake Heggie

Jake Heggie’s opera, based on Graham Greene’s novel, tells the story of a woman who makes a promise she must keep. A promise that will change her whole world.

Concert Opera Series:
Opera Medium-Rare (but well done!)

A series of three special concert opera productions

Each of these is a relatively unknown but dramatically solid work, full of wonderful vocal writing and vivid theatricality. Our presentations will be with piano accompaniment and musical direction by our music director Jonathan Khuner. The performances will be on-book, without staging or costumes, in Italian, and the audience will have enhanced supertitles to help them imagine the action.
