The Music Directors

Mary Chun has conducted numerous concerts and theatrical productions on three continents. As an opera conductor, she has collaborated with contemporary composers such as John Adams, Libby Larsen and Tan Dun. She was invited by stage director Peter Sellars to work on the development of Tan Dun’s Peony Pavilion which later premiered at Lincoln Center. In 2014 she became one of the first American musical theater music directors to be invited to China to direct Mandarin language versions of Broadway hits. Mary has conducted for Hawaii Opera Theatre, the Lyric Opera of Cleveland, Opera Idaho and Opera San Jose, to name just a few. She is the Principal Conductor of the new music ensemble Earplay, and Resident Music Director of Cinnabar Theater.

Jonathan Khuner has been West Edge Opera’s Music Director since 1985 and was also Artistic Director from 1994 – 2009. Jonathan has conducted countless operas for West Edge, most recently last year’s The Cunning Little Vixen and 2015’s Lulu. He has been an assistant conductor and prompter at San Francisco Opera for 32 years, at the Metropolitan opera for 17 years and also serves in that capacity with Lyric Opera of Chicago. He has worked with Santa Fe Opera, Miami Opera, and Opera Barga in Italy, as well as most Bay Area opera companies. In 2013 he conducted Tannhäuser in Tirana, Albania – the first ever production of a Wagner opera in that country.

The Orchestra

Snapshot's chamber orchestra is comprised of musicians from Earplay, San Francisco's leading new music ensemble. Earplay has been a cornerstone of new music performance in the Bay Area since its formation in 1985. Throughout its history the ensemble has commissioned over 80 works and premiered more than 140 pieces by today’s leading composers. The musicians will be led by Earplay's Mary Chun and West Edge Opera Musical Director Jonathan Khuner.
