Based on a film by Lars von Trier, Breaking the Waves tells the story of Bess McNeill, a young woman living in a small, austere Calvinist town. She is torn between her passion for her injured husband and the strict expectations of her community in this exploration of faith and agency.

Breaking the Waves is the winner of the 2016 Music Critics Association of North America award for Best New Opera and was nominated for Best World Premiere at the 2016 International Opera Awards.

General Director Mark Streshinsky will direct and Music Director Jonathan Khuner will conduct.
