The First Humans

(Die ersten menschen, 1920)

Composer, Rudi Stephen/ Librettist Otto Borngräber

American Premiere

"Adam and Eve with the Infants Cain and Abel" Baroque oil on canvas painting by the 17th-century Italian artist Nicola Vaccaro

The Story

Rudi Stephan's only opera, retells the story of the Bible's first family just after their expulsion from Paradise. Adam searches for meaning through work and harvest, while Evelongs for intimacy and another child. Their sons are opposites: the wild, sensual Cain and the devout Abel, who plays the perfect son. Cain whose only possible object of desire is his mother, comes to frighten her, while Abel turns to a newly revealed God who demands sacrifice. When both brothers fall for the same woman, envy drives Cain to kill his brother.

Based on Otto Borngräber's "erotic mystery" play, the opera centers on two ideas: the forbidden desire that comes from being the only four people on earth, and the birth of religion. Kajin and Chabel embody the pull between the earthly and the spiritual, leaving the family torn between God and pleasure. Stephan finished the score in 1914, but he was killed in World War I five years before its 1920 Frankfurt premiere, and this lush, rarely performed work remains one of the great operatic rediscoveries of the 20th century.

Learn more about Rudi Stephan and His Music

“Rudi Stephan was perhaps the most famous German composer killed in World War 1. His death at the Eastern Front in 1915 deprived Germany of the leading member of the informal Jungdeutsch movement of proto-Modernist composers influenced both by the late-Romantic music of Richard Strauss and the Impressionism of Debussy, but also the more Modernist music being premiered in the pre-war period by composers such as Alban Berg and Igor Stravinsky.”

Though Die ersten Menschen was his only opera, Rudi Stephan left a small but striking body of concert music, from the lush Music for Orchestra and Music for Seven String Instruments to the ballad Liebeszauber and a handful of songs. This playlist lets you explore it.
